Teaching Focus: Associate Professor Theresa Abodeeb-Gentile teaches literacy methods courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. She prepares teachers using research-based methods for helping elementary-aged students develop literacy skills and strategies across various learning contexts. She focuses her instruction on a multifaceted application of reading theory and helps pre-service teachers hone their teaching craft with an emphasis on becoming lifelong readers and writers.
Professional Interests: Abodeeb-Gentile examines the ways student and teacher interactions impact their identities as literacy learners in various contexts. This work includes participant-observer classroom research and critical discourse analysis. She also examines effective ways in which students learn various aspects of literacy in classrooms, from comprehension strategies, to using technology such as blogging and dialogue, to scaffold learning. Her most recent work includes examining the literacy practices and teacher professional development that improves student achievement in inner city schools.
